Week 4 - Looking Back

Some of the things we learned:

--- The importance of a compass in finding the place we want to go.
--- It’s a hard thing to hear correction – even from people whom we love and who love us, but we need to hear it anyway.
--- That if the Lord commanded us to build a ship (which He probably won’t), we could; and that if He commanded us to do some other “difficult” thing, we could, if we tried -- BECAUSE we would have His help!
--- That we need to look to the examples (both good and bad) of those who have gone before and learn from their choices - both good and bad. Nephi used their Israelite fathers to try to teach his people the obvious effects of when the Israelites remembered their God who brought them out of Egypt and when they didn’t.
--- Once we realize how much we need the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, we will more diligently try to keep the commandments.
--- How blessed we are to have the detailed prophecies about Jesus's life (plain and precious parts) that are restored to us in the Book of Mormon. Oh, the possibilities for the Jews and other Christians if those truths were still in our Old Testament!
--- That we should “liken all scriptures unto us” for our profit, our learning, and that we might have hope.
--- That Isaiah isn’t so bad. In fact, that prophet recorded some of the most beautiful words in all scripture. We considered these:
For can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee, O house of Israel. Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands;
Is there anything written anywhere that offers us more hope than these words? He loves us and he will never forget you and me – no matter how busy He gets with other things and other people. He is always available to us as individuals as we make our way through our own private wildernesses.
--- If we want to limit Satan’s power, all we have to do is live righteously.
--- That a model testimony can be found in the words of Nephi at the end of 1 Nephi:
Wherefore, my brethren, I would that ye should consider that the things which have been written upon the plates of brass are true; and they testify that a man must be obedient to the commandments of God.
Wherefore, ye need not suppose that I and my father are the only ones that have testified, and also taught them. Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is. Amen.
